Housing
Housing for this rotation is located on the campus of Western Kentucky University in the Visiting Scholars Residence (VSR). There are four VSR houses (2 for men and 2 for women) and all are located on Normal Drive within one block of the South Central AHEC office. This housing is designed for visiting scholars and not for families. Dr. Wheeler has visited these houses and approved this housing for all residents during their Community Medicine rotation in Bowling Green.
This housing is reserved a year in advance to insure availability. You are not required to stay in the VSR but you are required to use part of your financial stipend from AHEC to pay for this housing. The cost of this housing is $10 per day including weekends regardless of whether or not you stay in the house. There is also a $25 cleaning fee. The cost of the housing may be paid by check at the end of your rotation. Your check for housing should be made payable to WKU-VSR.
The VSRs are furnished with linens and towels but some residents prefer to bring their own. The bedrooms are private but you may share a bathroom, living room with television, and fully furnished kitchen. These houses are for visiting scholars like you. Some visiting scholars are here for a few days or weeks and some are here for a semester or a year. There may not be anyone else in the house when you are here or there could be one or two other visiting scholars during the time you are here. You will have a key to the house and to your bedroom. You will also be allowed to park your car at the VSR. This privilege alone is worth the cost of the housing! Parking on the WKU campus is as bad or worse than any other college campus and you will not have to worry about parking on campus.
There is no internet access in the VSR but the building directly across the street is the Mass Media and Technology Building and it is open 24 hours a day. You will have access to computers and the internet there. The WKU campus is almost completely wireless so if you bring your lap top, there are many areas on campus where you will be able to get a wireless connection. Unfortunately, this wireless connection does not reach to the VSR.
