Healthy Ages

Consider. Our 10 country Barren River Area Development District is home to 43,775 people over age 60 in 2000 (about 17% of the population).  The US Census Bureau anticipates that this number will grow by 91.4% to 83,776 in 2030 (about 26% of the area's population.).

Contemplate. Today’s older Americans are living longer, having lower rates of disability, achieving higher levels of education and less often living in poverty than their predecessors.

Celebrate.  Baby Boomers, the first of whom celebrated their 60th birthdays in 2006, promise to redefine further what it means to grow older in America.

Create. A new community by 2030, where almost 1-out-of-5 Americans, will be 65 years or older. The age group 85 and older is now the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population.

WKU's Center for Gerontology is committed to finding ways to help our 76 million baby boomers age better.

Please join us in congratulating Charity Gore, named our 2008 Outstanding Gerontology Student!

The next time your husband or grandmother tells that story you've heard at least a gazillion times, think of it as an important developmental stage of adulthood.
