Chemistry Club Activities
2007 - 2008

Below is a sampling of some of our activities for the 2007-2008 academic year.  Be sure to stop by our room (TCCW 424) and check out our poster from the National ACS meeting about our club.

National Chemistry Week

National Chemistry Week: Over 30 members helped at a booth in the local largest Greenwood Mall during National Chemistry Week, introducing children to shrinking polystyrene toys. The chemistry club helped the children to make “Shrinky Dinks” from polystyrene.  Because we did not want to overwhelm the facilities with a large number of people, some of the chem club members assisted with preparing the polystyrene or shopping for supplies prior to the trip.  The club also had prepared a gift bag for each child that included mechanical pencils, pens, erasers, and index cards (used by the children at the school) purchased by the SA chapter.  The event was extraordinarily successful, and most of the children made 4-5 Shrinky Dinks each.

During NCW,  the club also made ca. 300 cup liguid nitrogen ice cream to hand out on campus.

Community Service

We have also attempted to find creative ways of combining chemistry demonstrations and other activities to serve society.

For examples, the club visited the HolyTrinity school to do chemistry “magic shows” , "Shrinky Dinks" and "Liquid nitrogen Ice Cream". In addition, we also assisted Boy&Girl Scout troops in earning chemistry badges. Several trips have also been made to a local Poter children’s home, where members have made tye-dye t-shirts, liquid nitrogen ice-cream, and silly putty with the children. The chapter organized two events for the children at the Potter’s Children’s Home where we performed a demonstration of shrinking polystyrene toys and the effects of liquid nitrogen on an inflated balloon

Attending National  Meeting and  Open Hosuse of  Graudate  Programe

In 2007 Fall, the club also supported seven students to attend the open house of Life Scicence graduate profgrame at Purdue University. In 2008 spring, 15 student affilaites have had the opportunity to attend medical school at the University of Louisville. Our students gained some important expericence to promote their professional developments.

The chapter sent 17 students to the 234th National ACS meeting in New Orleans this spring. Most of these students presented their research posters at the meeting.  The chapter presented a poster during Sci-Mix highlighting some of our professional development and community service activities.  Additionally, some affiliates of the chapter served as volunteers for the undergraduate events at ACS National Meeting.

Fundrasing

Student Affiliates at WKU have participated in a number of fundraising activities to serve our community, including Relay for Life and Big Brothers/Big Sisters College Bowl For Kids’ Sake. On December 2007, the chapter held a three-day bake sale , and a total of $400 was raised to buy Christmas gifts including clothes, shoes, and toys for 4  adopted fat Warren Elementary (Bowling Green KY). Several club members (including those not on the Relay for Life team) assisted with two pasta dinner (~$300 raised) for fundraising. On April of 2007 at Downing University Center of WKU, We formed one bowling teams and raised ~$125 for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kentucky during the annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser. Liquid nitrogen ice cream was also made in the fall of 2006 for two outreach activities planned by the club.
