GIS Workshop at Southwest University of ChinaIn August of 2008 the China Environmental Health Project completed a key component of its educational activities by holding a GIS (Geographic Information System) Workshop: “GIS Techniques in Terrain Modeling for Karst and Cave Related Research” for graduate and undergraduate students at the Southwest University of China. The workshop trained 19 graduate and undergraduate students in intermediate level terrain modeling and terrain analysis techniques. Several data formats new to the students were introduced. The students gained an appreciation for the fundamentals of units, coordinate systems and projections as well as many complexities of building 3D models. Through the course of the week students built 2D and 3D GIS projects covering Mengzi, Yunnan, the area of several previous field research events. Many of the students had been involved in the field studies and were familiar with the area. By the end of the week students had a 3D model complete with ground terrain, satellite imagery draped on top, and cave surveys extending below (the same cave surveys some of the students helped perform).
