GM Foundation funding will be used to support GM GREEN, a partnership between community-based organizations in GM communities and the nonprofit organization Earth Force. Locally, the Center for Environmental Education and Sustainability at WKU has been coordinating GM GREEN in Bowling Green since 2005. Through the program, young people are challenged to be active community citizens, tackling water quality issues with hands-on science.
This fall, the Center is planning to facilitate stream investigations at Trammel Creek with local schools. A typical stream investigation allows the students to study the physical, chemical and biological aspects of Trammel Creek. We plan to take students from Bowling Green Independent, Russellville Independent, and Warren County Public schools in the month of September.
Development of a "Disconnected Classroom" started October 18, 2013, in Warren County, KY, with installing a vernal pond to provide real-life experiences with scientific material through discovery learning.
Phase 2a for the initial road and utility infrastructure, including permeable parking and a road-length bioswale designed to help with stormwater management, was completed in fall, 2013, using EPA 319(h) funds from the KY Division of Water.
