Course Objectives

The intent of this course is to present the material most commonly requested for review by board eligible veterinarians planning to sit the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM) board examination. Topics to be covered include epidemiology and biostatistics; food safety; environmental health; toxicology; public health policy and administration; infectious diseases; health behavior and health education, and other current topics in veterinary preventive medicine.

Format

The course will be taught using distance learning technology (Blackboard) coordinated by the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach (DELO) at Western Kentucky University. Each week, approximately 1.5-2 hours of PowerPoint presentations will be posted to a course website; participants can access the presentations any time during the course once they are available. In addition, presenters will schedule an interactive online chat, conference call or other interactive format during the scheduled week of that presentation so that participants can get further clarification about material in the presentations. Blackboard is also very conducive to the sharing of materials; as resources are identified by either instructors or participants, they can be posted to the course website and easily distributed to all interested parties. Distance learning technology allows for wide participation regardless of the participants’ geographic location and available schedule. There will also be a Discussion Board available through Blackboard that will be used to take student questions and allow student discussions. We will not schedule conference calls, podcasts or other interactive forms of presentation if course participants are not requesting them. In other words, if you don’t participate and tell us you want more details, we will move on with the course.

Cost

The review course costs $175 per participant. In addition, we will offer four face-to-face sessions where participants may come in person. The materials from these sessions will be recorded by digital video and posted to the course site. There is no additional cost for these sessions. You are welcome to attend any or none.

In the past, this course has been offered over an intensive weekend in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for approximately $300 plus the direct and indirect costs of traveling to the area. The distance learning format allows for a more economical approach to impart the same information as has been provided previously.

Technological Requirements

A computer with internet access and speakers; telephone. Presentations will be offered in PowerPoint. However, presentations can be provided in pdf format and read with the free Adobe Reader software. Students will need to request presentations to be provided in pdf format, if PowerPoint is not available on a local computer. All aspects of the course will be enhanced by the use of a high-speed internet connection. You may experience delays in receiving and posting content if using a dial-up connection. It is highly recommended that you use a high-speed connection, if possible. Additionally, this will increase download speeds for presentations and other content.
