Scholars in Service Position- Mammoth Cave After Dark Counselor- Fall 2017

Position Description: Mammoth Cave After Dark is a new collaborative project between the park, the Friends of Mammoth Cave, nearby schools and Western Kentucky University to bring students to the Park for experiences that will encourage family bonding while fostering an appreciation for nature.

Mammoth Cave After Dark seeks two WKU students to serve as camp counselors for the After Dark tours on October 20, October 22nd, and November 3rd from 2:30-9:30 pm. Camp counselors will be responsible for supervising student attendees and assisting park rangers with environmental education activities. Successful applicants must demonstrate a background or interest in environmental sciences, environmental education, or cultural and historical interpretation. Counselors will receive a $100 stipend from WKU Department of Diversity & Community Studies. Applications and a resume should be submitted to sis@wku.edu by September 22, 2017.

Student Assistant Position- 2017-18 academic year (position is filled for Fall 2017)

 Position Description: The WKU Center for Citizenship & Social Justice is hiring two student assistants for the 2017-18 academic year. Student assistants support the day-to-day functions of the Center and assist in the coordination of service opportunities and campus/community partnerships and events. Student staff are supervised by the Program Support Specialist. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain Center communications by answering phone calls, responding to email, and greeting walk-in visitors daily; timely responses expected in all forms of communication
  • Coordinate speaking and presentation opportunities
  • Research, organize, and develop volunteer opportunity listings
  • Coordinate volunteer placements for individuals and groups
  • Research, organize, and develop public engagement content for the website, social media and newsletter
  • Update the nonprofit directory and community resource guide
  • Assist with preparations for programs, trainings, and events
  • Assist the director and Center staff with daily tasks, as needed

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize work

 Status Reports: Student assistants will provide weekly verbal status reports to share updates and address any question/concerns with assigned tasks. Students will also develop position goals for routine reference to ensure goals of the position and professional goals are being met. Students should expect to complete a semester evaluation in review of what you accomplished, what you have learned, and what you would like to learn in the position if continued.

 Time Allotted: Up to 20 hours a week.

GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT for The $100 Solution™ - 2017-18 academic year

The $100 Solution™ Graduate Teaching Assistantship (position is filled)

 Position Description:  WKU Center for Citizenship & Social Justice seeks a Graduate Teaching Assistant for The $100 Solution™ (THDS) program at WKU for the 2017-18 academic year with an opportunity for continuance. The $100 Solution™ GTA provides teaching and program administrative assistance for The $100 Solution™ (THDS) program at WKU. Teaching responsibilities will include co-teaching students involved in THDS courses or co-curricular programs, as well as grading reflections, training students, and other teaching duties as assigned. The GTA may also work with partnering organizational contacts, faculty from partnering WKU departments, and the national THDS board of directors. This position is supervised by the Director of the Center for Citizenship & Social Justice.

 Responsibilities related to management of The $100 Solution™ program at WKU may include:

  • Assist with $100 Solution trainings for WKU students in and out of class, faculty, staff, and community members who want to learn how to complete $100 Solution projects
  • Serve as a resource to $100 Solution faculty and students
  • Assist with bi-annual $100 Solution staff and faculty training
  • Coordinate end-of-semester recognition event
  • Manage $100 Solution social media and website updates
  • Keep $100 Solution digital and printed files up to date
  • Maintain list of projects with continued need
  • Prepare semester reports
  • Maintain databases of completed projects, certified students and community members, alumni, faculty, courses, and community partners
  • Assist with THDS partner luncheon for participating organizations
  • Assist with fundraising campaigns for THDS at WKU
  • Manage application and reporting processes
  • Assist in tracking of expenditure authorizations and receipts
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of new THDS initiatives

Scholars in Service Research Graduate Assistant - 2017-18 academic year (position is filled)

 Position Description:  WKU Center for Citizenship & Social Justice (CCSJ) seeks a graduate research assistant for AY 2017-18 to support the WKU Scholars in Service (SIS) program, a scholarship program supporting student engagement at WKU. In this role, the GRA will assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of the SIS program. This GRA will also identify a research topic relating to the impact of community-based learning experiences on student development and complete the research project by the end of the assistantship period. The Scholars in Service graduate assistant will work directly with WKU faculty, staff, students and community partners to plan and implement the Scholars in Service program under the supervision of program director. Other duties may be identified for the graduate assistant based on the graduate assistant’s learning goals, skills and capacities.

 Responsibilities related to management of the Scholars in Service program at WKU may include:

  •  Completing a research project relating to the impact of community-based learning on student development  
  • Develop and maintain relationships with campus and community partners of the Scholars in Service program
  • Assist in the fine-tuning of the goals, criteria, application, reporting, process and assessment of the Scholars in Service program
  • Assist in the development of the Scholars in Service program reporting and documentation guidelines
  • Work with WKU Offices of Enrollment Management, Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Aid to ensure the integration of program recruitment into existing university efforts
  • Assist in the development of assessment tools for other CCSJ programs
  • Assist with student recruitment through speaking engagements and recruitment events
  • Assist with professional writing assignments for CCSJ programs
  • Contribute to the social media promotion of CCSJ programs
