KNLT partners with the KY State Nature Preserves Commission to identify areas in KY that are most in need of protection, and then to negotiate the purchase of land with willing sellers, and implement a stewardship plan. Areas of critical ecological importance receive the highest protection by being dedicated as a Kentucky State Nature Preserve.

Comprises 800 acres of land located on the Green River near Mammoth Cave National Park. Provides graduate, undergraduate and K-12 students with unique learning experiences related to aquatic and land ecology, aquatic and land restoration, and studies of endangered species. Educational outreach, teacher education and research opportunities.
