SPRING RETIREMENT WEEK

April 7th – 11th, 2014

The Department of Human Resources, in partnership with VALIC, is hosting our 7th Annual Spring Retirement Savings Week.

FREE Lunch and Learn sessions on various topics will be offered throughout the week along with many other interesting and informative seminars. Topics offered will focus on young adults, beginning savers, seasoned investors, and individuals nearing retirement.


 MONDAY, APRIL 7TH

 

The Fundamentals of Saving for Retirement at WKU

This session, led by Kari Aikins, will provide an overview of the various retirement options at WKU (KTRS, KERS, ORP, 403b, 457b, 401k, 529, and Roth 403b) and a high level explanation of how these plans work. Participants will gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of investing and why it's important to save for retirement. This session is designed for beginning savers or those new to WKU interested in learning about our retirement offerings.

Kentucky Retirement Systems (KERS) Overview

Aimee Rives, KERS representative, will lead a session and answer your questions regarding KERS retirement plan benefits. This session is strongly recommended for new and active members who wish to gain a better understanding of the benefits of the KERS retirement system.

LUNCH & LEARN: Retirement Strategies for Women

Women face unique financial hurdles as they plan to invest for the future. The seminar emphasizes the importance of having a personal plan, a sound strategy and a consistent approach to saving. It provides information to help women of all ages accumulate the money they'll need for a financially secure retirement. Topics covered include: (a) women making strides, (b) retirement challenges, (c) retirement income sources, (d) workplace retirement plans, and (e) investment planning.

Kentucky Retirement Systems (KERS) Pre-Retirement Educational Session

Aimee Rives, KERS representative, will lead a session designed for those nearing retirement. This informative session will provide an overview of the various retirement options, the retirement process, and answer your questions about retiring under KERS. This session is strongly recommended for KERS participants planning to retire within the next 3 to 5 years.

LUNCH & LEARN – Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits

Social Security is a confusing topic for many individuals. To answer your questions, please join Troy Miller with Hilliard Lyons to learn how your social security benefits are calculated, the impacts of taking social security now versus later, spousal and survivor benefits, benefits for divorced individuals and much more.

Kentucky Teacher's Retirement System (KTRS) Overview

Sr. Benefit Counselor, Debi Newman, will lead a group informational session and answer your questions regarding KTRS retirement benefits. KTRS representatives will also be conducting one-on-one retirement consultations with interested members all day on April 10th. Contact HR at 5-5345 to schedule an appointment for a 1:1 session.

LUNCH & LEARN – 529 College Savings Plan

Kathleen M. Griffin, Program Manager with TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc., will lead a webinar explaining the benefits of using the state sponsored 529 College Savings Program. Information on how this tax advantaged savings plan can help families save for higher education expenses will be discussed.

LUNCH & LEARN: WKU's Transitional Retirement Plan (TRP) for Faculty

Kari Aikins, WKU Sr. Comp & Benefits Consultant, will provide an overview of WKU's Transitional Retirement Program. Faculty members eligible for retirement but wishing to continue teaching on a part-time basis following retirement should attend this informative session and see if it might be a good fit. The TRP is designed to transition faculty members into full retirement over 5 years while continuing to provide unique salary and benefit opportunities during the transition. Human Resources will provide tools for estimating your retirement income and demonstrate how this program could actually increase your net income.
