MISSION STATEMENT

The International Health and Human Service Learning Program extends the mission of Western Kentucky University and the College of Health and Human Services by providing health and human services which promote wellness of body, mind, and environment to the underserved community of Gales Point, Belize.  Participants of the program engage in hands-on and reflective projects teaching them to be socially responsible citizen leaders of a global society.

GOALS

1.    To provide service learning experiences to students in the College of Health and Human Services

2.    To provide a community-based participatory research environment

3.    To collaborate with the Belizean healthcare system at a national, regional, and local level to improve the long-term health and human services of Belize.

TRAVEL UPDATE:

1/15/12 at 3:24pm - "We just arrived at Lamanai. The trip was longer than expected due to rain and having to go by bus rather than boat. The weather is perfect now and we are going to enjoy lunch in this open area before settling into our rooms."

1/13/12 at 3:50pm - "We finished up day 3 of clinic.  The students are all gaining valuable experience and enjoying Gales Point!  It is very hot here but the scenery and helping the people makes all the sweating worth it!"

1/10/12 at 11:07pm - "We made it to Gales Point safe and sound!  We'll be here until Sunday morning!"

1/9/12 at 5:28pm - "We were greeted by hot sunshine when we arrived in Belize!!! We are settling into the hotel, going to eat dinner, and resting up tonight for this venture ahead of us!"

1/9/12 at 12:24pm - The crew is about to take off from their layover in rainy Dallas and head to sunny Belize!  Check back here for updates as they become available!
