AT HOME: A KENTUCKY PROJECT WITH JUDY CHICAGO AND DONALD WOODMAN |
|
Facilitated by internationally famous artist Judy Chicago and her husband, award winning photographer Donald Woodman, this 2001 project aimed "to raise awareness for both women and men about the gendered dimensions of domestic space, to explore the transition from traditional to contemporary ways of understanding that space, and to empower students of different ages, races, and class backgrounds."
Professor John Warren Oakes of Western Kentucky University's Department of Art & associate, artist Andee Rudloff were participants in the project which involved 25 professional artists and students who collaborated to create a multi-media transformation of a house into a work of art exploring the idea of domestic space through such themes as historic changes in the home, marital conflicts, childhood fears, aging, eating disorders, race, sibling rivalry, abuse, rape and gender issues.
Oakes and Rudloff worked under the direction of Chicago and Woodman to replicate the installations in 1:12 scale models of the house, basement and garage installations. Rudloff is coordinating and curating the traveling exhibition which includes the models, photo-documentary panels produced by participants and original art. A video with interviews of Chicago and Woodman plus a PowerPoint slide show provide context for the exhibition. Chicago, Woodman, Dr. Vivien Green Fryd, Professor of Art History and American Studies, Gender and Women's Studies at Vanderbilt University and the original participants may be contracted for lectures with the exhibition. |
