Bio

Robert Choate’s interest in engineering began at an early age. Playing to his academic strengths in mathematics and science, he attended Old Dominion University in the late 1970s. Upon graduation, he entered the telecommunications industry as a thermal design engineer. For twenty years, Choate pursued the opportunity to tinker and play and along the way received recognition for authorship and innovation through technical publications and patents. Working for companies such as IBM, Ericsson Telecommunications and Harris Broadcast Communications, Choate held a variety of positions in product development and manufacture, and in system reliability analysis and testing.  Displaying a talent for training entry-level engineers, Choate turned to teaching. His philosophy focuses on the value of building relationships with students through mentorship, adding a valuable skill set to the engineering discipline. By helping students realize their full potential, he looks for a return on his investment in the production of human capital and our society’s economic growth. Choate demonstrates this discipline by actively engaging his engineering students through extracurricular projects, such as the energy analysis of various campus structures and the design, build and testing of laboratory test beds. Additionally, he extends this engagement beyond the department via his community involvement with younger middle and high school students in organizations, such as the Boy Scouts of America, and on school teams and in competitions, including, Kentucky Bluegrass Robotics Competition, JETS TEAMS, the Purple Comets Math Meet and the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition through their Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving competitions.
