E-Mail

  • What type of e-mail is provided and how do I access it?
    • E-mail accounts are provided at no charge for all WKU employees and may be accessed using either an IMAP or POP mail client, or via a web browser. Normally, WKU employees access their e-mail either through the WKU Mozilla icon on the desktop or through a web browser using WEBMAIL. To use Webmail, go to http://webmail.wku.edu and enter your e-mail account name and password.

  • How do I obtain a faculty/staff e-mail account?
    • Your e-mail address will be created for you automatically. It will be formatted as firstname.lastname@wku.edu with your password initially set to a random value. To change this initial password, follow the instructions "How do I change my e-mail password" below. In the event that someone else already has an e-mail account with the same name, you will be firstname.lastnameX@wku.edu where you are the X number person with that account name.

  • How do I change my e-mail password?
    • First, open a web browser (i.e. Netscape, or Internet Explorer) and go to http://www.wku.edu/accounts/ From there, click on "What's my account username and password?" Next, read the on-screen instructions for changing your password.

  • How do I check my e-mail off campus?
    • You may access your WKU e-mail account through a web browser using WEBMAIL from any computer system with Internet access, either on or off campus. To do this, go to http://webmail.wku.edu and enter the required logon information.

  • How do I request a mass student email?
    • Go to Western's Home page www.wku.edu . Next, access "Quick Links" and select "Intranet" from the drop-down box. Then select "Fac/Staff Services" and choose the "Submit Student Mass Email Request" option.

Voice Mail

  • How do I set up my Audix™ voice mail?
    • Faculty or staff wishing to set up voice mail on their phone needs to either call the Department of Telecommunications at 745-6370 or send an e-mail to: telecommunications@wku.edu. The e-mail should include the first and last name of the person needing voice mail, their phone number, and their office location (building and room number).

Student Data Access

  • How do I request Banner Student Account and training?
    • Contact Administrative Systems and Applications by calling 745-8812 or 745-5200 to schedule training and creation of your account.

  • How do I request Student TopNet and/or on_line report access and training?
    • Contact Administrative Systems and Applications by calling 745-8812 or 745-5200 to schedule training and creation of your account.

Finance Data Access

  • How do I request Banner Finance Account and training:
    • Requesting Banner Finance Access and Training contact seroba.hardcastle@wku.edu. Request for Account Number, Changes in Account Number, Change in Responsible Person or Banner Access Change go to: http://www.wku.edu/Dept/Support/FinAdmin/Accounting.htm, click on Forms. Print Form, complete and submit to Benjamin Harmon WAB room 13.

Web Assistance

General
  • How do I create a web page account?
    • Go to the web page located at http://www.wku.edu/webmaster/ click on “Publish Website.” Then provide the required information. NOTE you must have a valid WKU e-mail address before you may set up a web page account.

Faculty
  • Where do I get assistance in developing my web course?
    • Contact Academic Technology for assistance at 745-3754.

  • I need to develop web items for my course, where do I get help?

  • I would like to have software used in my course added to the Open University Laboratories, where do I go?

    • If you need technical assistance, please call the Help Desk at 745-7000 or fill out the help request form at http://www.wku.edu/helpdesk .

Other Training

  • How do I Sign up for computer-training sessions not Banner related?
    • Training is offered through Microcomputing Services either as scheduled sessions or on demand. For a list of scheduled training sessions and an online registration form, go to http://www.wku.edu/helpdesk and click Microcomputing, then on the left side of the page click Training.
    • On-demand training is available for a variety of common University supported desktop applications and may be obtained by sending an e-mail to jeff.jones@wku.edu or calling 745-7000.

Hardware and Software

  • What kind of hardware does the university use?
    • Because hardware is continually changing, the current standards are listed on the Help Desk web site and are updated monthly.

  • What types of laptops are supported?
    • See Help Desk website for an up to date list.

  • What operating systems are used?
    • Windows XP

  • What software does the university provide?
    • Office 2003 and Norton Antivirus is provided on all university owned machines. The Internet Explorer browser and Mozilla e-mail client are also provided for all PCs.

Network

  • What kind of Network is used at Western and what does it provide?
    • WKU has a Novell Netware 4 local area network. Physical access is provided using 10/100 Ethernet connections. The network provides access to shared software, shared and private disk storage, printing, the Internet and e-mail through the use of password protected network accounts. The network also has WAN links to the University's remote campus location.

  • How do I get a network account?
    • New faculty and staff will be given an account upon request by their department head or authorized office associate. Your network account will be you last name in most cases. You will be prompted to enter a password when you start your computer. The password will be your last name, unless your last name is less than six characters. In this case, it will be increased to six characters by adding 1’s at the end. For example, the initial password for Joe Doe would be doe111.

  • How do I change my password?
    • For windows XP, hit CTL+ALT+DEL and choose the buttom labeled change password. For security purposes, your password must be at least six characters and cannot be the same as a previously used password. You will be automatically prompted to change your password approximately every 90 days.
