International Center (Western Kentucky Refugee Assistance Association)

Contact Number: 781-8336

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

English Tutoring - Teach immigrants and refugees in their homes or assist in the English classes held at the center. We have a great need for one-on-one literacy training. This help could be as simple as holding one-on-one conversations with students to allow for additional English practice.

Family Friends - Adopt a refugee family and assist them in their transition by just being a friend! You could also help them with community orientation, introduction to church, transportation to the grocery, and trust building. Remember, refugees have suffered a great deal. Trust is the most important thing they can build. Your friendship may be the most important thing in their lives.

Arts and Crafts - Facilitate a seminar that teaches a specific technique or involves a certain craft. One time events or ongoing series are welcome. This can be oriented toward children or adults.

Children's Programs - Read to children or help with games.

If you are interested in volunteering for this agency, please click on Sign Up and fill out the information sheet. Be sure to specify which activity/activities you would like to volunteer for.

Arabic, Swahili, and Karen Speakers Needed

Contact Number: 781-8336

The BG International Center is seeking Arabic, Swahili, and Karen-speaking interpreters and volunteers to help them out with their newest arrivals. They need volunteers who can come in for a minimum of 8 hours per week to help their caseworkers, in their effort to resettle these newly arrived refugee families. The position would be that of a casework assistant, and would be on a volunteer basis. They are in great need of volunteers who can help with the resettlement process of these families. Volunteers will learn about refugee issues and about nonprofit work. There may be some clerical and phone-answering duties involved. They are also looking for Family Mentors for these clients. The International Center is a non-sectarian, voluntary organization that helps refugees and immigrants start new lives of self-reliance and independence in the U.S.  Locally, we provide basic resettlement services, family reunification, financial support, employment services, career training, and immigration services to individuals and families from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
