We need more volunteers to walk dogs and spend time with the animals at the shelter. Many dogs are housebroken, but don't even get out once a day. Other dogs could become housebroken if they were taken out each day. A form is used to keep track of which dogs have been out each day. We would like volunteers to schedule their time so there are enough volunteers each day. Volunteer manuals are available at the shelter and online. It is helpful if you can read the volunteer and shelter help manuals before volunteering. New volunteers need to schedule an orientation and/or be matched with an experienced volunteer.

We have started an online volunteer group to help volunteers communicate with each other and keep informed of shelter needs. It includes a message board, links to other sites, photos, volunteer manuals and other files to download, and photos. You will need to complete a short information email before being approved for the group.

Youth Volunteers-Volunteers Under 18

You must be 18 or over to fill out an online application or join the online volunteer group. Volunteers under 18 must come to shelter with parent or guardian to complete volunteer application and sign liability form. All volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian with them when volunteering at the shelter. Parents or guardians would need to attend orientation and training when required for certain activities. We hope to have more volunteer opportunities for youth in the future.

If you are interested in helping , please fill out one of our online volunteer applications at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/bgwchs.html ! If you are in another state but want to help with transporting animals to rescue & forever homes, please fill one out!

These volunteer opportunities are available for young people ages 14 and up:

You do not have to have horse experience to volunteer. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and physically fit to walk approximately an hour and jog occasionally. Volunteers will need to commit 1-2 hours per week during our riding season.

Our volunteers are needed to work with our students as sidewalkers and horse leaders; orientation is a requirement for Volunteers and Jr. Volunteers.

We are also in need of volunteers for the office, fundraising, equipment care, horse schooling, photography and videography and special events.
