Scholars in Service

 Effective fall 2016

Scholars in Service is a multi-year scholarship program designed to assist Western Kentucky University students (that have a heart for community service) with the cost of their college education. The Scholars in Service program provides a leadership model to support the elevation of academic, personal, and professional development. Scholars in Service receive a scholarship towards their education for participating in community service, professional training, and personal enrichment programs.

Scholars in Service dedicate time each week to community development projects organized by campus and local nonprofit organizations. Students serve independently, as well as in groups, to complete their service requirements. Scholars in Service are trained through a service-learning model to lead collaborative efforts with the goal of making a lasting impact in the communities in which they serve. Capacity-building, reciprocity, and partnerships are important elements to the service efforts implemented by Scholars in Service.

Beginning spring 2016, new Scholars in Service are expected to enroll in the service-learning track of the Certificate in Organizational Leadership. Scholars in Service advance academically through a focus on experiential learning. Service-learning sections in the certificate program, in addition to other service-learning course electives, are designed to prepare students to be citizen professionals and servant leaders.

Scholars in Service are selected based on their prior community service experience, leadership experience, application responses, as well as financial need determined through their FAFSA. Once selected, students will begin a developmental journey of service and leadership that will not only assist with higher education costs but also equip them with critical life skills and real world experience that will separate them from their job-seeking peers. Scholars in Service will learn what it means to become successful, well-rounded students and effective agents of change.

The WKU Scholars in Service program is coordinated by the WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships and is supported through a partnership with WKU Enrollment Management and WKU Student Financial Assistance.
