Canned food drive begins for HOTEL INC and Salvation Army.

Drop-offs:  (during business hours) ALIVE Center,  HOTEL INC, Salvation Army, Sweet CeCe's, and Starbucks on Scottsville Rd.

Food will be collected at each event during the week. There will be a competition for the civic organization and department or business that collects the most canned goods. The civic organization that collects the most canned goods will receive 10 pizzas for their organization. The department or business that collects the most canned goods will receive 10 free lunches from Fazoli's.

Coordinated by WKU Honors College Students

Students can use their leftover meal plans to purchase items that will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Think Outside the Box – Hunger & Homelessness Awareness

Campus and Community groups will share information on hunger and homelessness issues locally, nationally, and internationally. Eight groups will be participating in this event. Some of them include: Community Action, HOTEL INC, BRASS, Habitat for Humanity, The Senase Project, Share a Swipe, and Universities Fighting World Hunger.

Forum on Homelessness

Coordinated by the South Central Kentucky Coalition on Homelessness

The purpose of the event is to take bring together community leaders, service providers, and concerned citizens and take a comprehensive look at the issue of homelessness in the region. A panel discussion and open dialogue will allow participants to explore the challenges, successes, and opportunities for supporting organizations and individuals to partner to address the ongoing challenges of homelessness.

This event is based on the Oxfam© Hunger Banquet. Individuals participating in the World Hunger Banquet should attend with the mindset of learning about world poverty issues and partaking of meals in a way that is representative of the area of the world in which they will be randomly assigned. Admission will be $5.00 to be donated to the Bowling Green Backpack program. The backpack program provides food in backpacks to youth that do not have access to food on the weekends.

Gain the Grain

Freerice.com challenge to support the United Nations World Food Program

November 14-18th

Coordinated by WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships and KidStuffAroundTown.com

As a way to encourage learning at all ages, the WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships and KidStuffAroundTown is asking people to visit the freerice.com website to gain rice for the United Nations World Food Program during Hunger & Homelessness Week November 14-18. On the website, people can play a game with defining words that provides food for the number of responses correct. This allows youth and adults to learn about the issue and truly feel like they have made a difference. The ALIVE Center and KidStuffAroundTown.com is coordinating the project as a challenge to schools and youth-servicing organizations and adults of a all ages. Coordinators for youth will sign-up groups at freerice.com, and the group or school with the most grains donated, through participating in the online games during the week, will win a night of discounts in Bowling Green. In addition, the top winners in each category will win a special recognition and goodie bag. Before beginning on November 14th, schools, nonprofits, and churches should contact Aurelia Spaulding to add your name to the participation list. Volunteers will sign up by calling Habitat at 843-6027

At the end of the week, volunteers will work with Habitat for Humanity. This organization is founded on the idea that every man, woman, and child should have a decent, safe, and affordable place to live. Volunteers will learn how working together affects building a community.

Dinging with Dabaab

On November 14-16, the Bates-Runner and McLean Hall Staff will begin providing food similiar to that received by those in the Dadaab Refugee Camp.
