To assist you in choosing the appropriate math course for a student whose major requires COLLEGE ALGEBRA, the Department of Mathematics offers the following placement information. Beside each category of Math Placement Exam (MPE) and Math ACT scores, we have indicated the course for which the student would qualify.
MPE 16 or higher OR Math ACT 22 or higher AND at least 3.0 in high school algebra => Math 118
MPE 14 or higher OR Math ACT 22 or higher AND at least 3.0 in high school algebra => Math 116
MPE below 14, BUT Math ACT 22 or higher => Math 116E*
MPE 14 or higher, BUT Math ACT below 18 => Math 116E*
ENROLLMENT IN ANY SECTION OF MATH 116 (or MATH 116E) REQUIRES A COURSE PASS.
If Math 116 (116E) is the appropriate course for your advisee, he or she can obtain a paper pass on O-A-R days or an electronic pass in the Mathematics Department office (TCCW 357) at other times.
Students who need College Algebra, but do not qualify for Math 116 or Math 118 should enroll in Math 096 (Intermediate Algebra); students with MPE below 6 should enroll in DMA 055 (Introductory Algebra) at the Bowling Green Community College of WKU.
For students who have completed Math 096 (Intermediate Algebra), we make these recommendations based on performance in that course:
Math 096 grade of A => Math 116 or 118**
Math 096 grade of B => Math 116
Math 096 grade of C => Math 116E
Math 096 grade of D or F => Math 096 (repeat)
Students currently enrolled in Math 096 will receive information from their instructors prior to the registration period regarding their eligibility for Math 116 or Math 116E*.
* Math 116E is a special version of Math 116 that meets nine times in two weeks for the standard three hours credit. Class meetings combine lectures with study sessions in which students work individually and/or in groups to complete homework and/or supplementary assignments. Attendance is mandatory.
Note: In the schedule bulletin, they are listed as meeting MTWRF, so they look different.
** Students who have completed Math 096 are strongly urged to substitute Math 116-117 for Math 118.
Information about your advisee’s ACT and MPE scores and WKU mathematics course record can be found on the MPE advice slip obtained during O-A-R or on the Student Test Scores screen on TOPNET. We appreciate your taking the time to help your advisees enroll in the appropriate courses, so that difficult schedule changes at the beginning of the semester can be avoided.
Note: If a student's program does not require algebra, s/he may enroll in Math 109.
