Students Get Involved with Beta Alpha Psi
This was another outstanding year for the Eta Omicron chapter of Beta Alpha Psi at WKU. The chapter achieved superior status for the sixth consecutive year. This designation requires members and candidates go above and beyond the required professional and service activities. Before the fall semester started, the BAP officers got off to a running start by attending the annual meeting in San Jose, California. Here they were given opportunities to learn about fundraising, recruiting, networking, and preparing members for success.
This year's professional presentations included some familiar faces. Ann Puckett with BKD returned to campus to offer insight into the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring process, while Whitney Lawson from Becker helped bring students up-to-date on changes to the Uniform CPA Examination. Students were also given a chance to explore the opportunities supplied by an accounting degree at the annual Meet the Firms event. Present were recruiters from public accounting firms, private companies, and even governmental agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service and both the Kentucky and Tennessee Departments of Audit.
Members contributed their time in a variety of ways during the year. Many became volunteer income tax preparers for students and eligible University employees. Under the supervision of Professor Richard Callahan, these students devoted 175 hours and prepared 206 personal tax returns. Several members also participated in bell ringing for the Salvation Army and the annual Big Brother Big Sisters "Bowl for Kids' Sake" with BKD. The chapter also helped with the first Accounting Careers Awareness Day, when nearly 200 high school students and teachers arrived on campus to learn about the University and opportunities in accounting.
As this year draws to a close, the Eta Omicron chapter and its members look forward to the opportunities next year will bring to grow as students, citizens, and young professionals. We would like to thank everyone who helped make 2010 an amazing year for Beta Alpha Psi at WKU.
