WKU Accounting Honors Outstanding Alumni:
John Grider ('61) and Donovan Schultz ('01)
Outstanding Accounting Alumnus
Mr. John Grider is a BU graduate who received a B.S. Degree in Accounting in 1961. He has extensive business experience in public accounting and finance. As one of the overseers of the Meany-Holland Fund, Mr. Grider has played a quiet, behind-the-scenes, but yet very active role in support of WKU's accounting program.
In terms of experience in the business community, Mr. Grider is likely to be one of a few, if not the only, people to be a partner in both the Holland CPA firm and the Meany CPA firm, now BKD. In addition to a successful career in public accounting, Mr. Grider has held senior executive positions in the banking and finance industry. He currently serves as the Vice President and Trust Officer for PBI Bank.
Regarding public and civic service, Mr. Grider has been an active member of his church, holding various positions of responsibility; a member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cottey College; a member of the WKU Investing the Spirit Campaign Cabinet where he was Chair of the National Deferred Giving Committee and a member of the WKU Century of Spirit; member of Girl's Inc. Board of Directors; member of the Kentucky Museum Advisory Council; and numerous other civic and humanitarian organizations.
John Grider's long-term service to the Bowling Green community, his support of Western Kentucky University and higher education in general, and his outstanding professional careers in public accounting and in banking are indicators of his dedications and commitment to improving the quality of life for the people in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Nominated by the Department of Accounting as our Outstanding Alumnus, John Grider has also been selected as this year's Outstanding Alumnus for the Gordon Ford College of Business.
In recognition of his contributions to the profession and our program, Beta Alpha Psi is proud to initiate Mr. Grider as this year's honorary BAP member.
Outstanding Recent Alumnus
Donovan graduated from WKU in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He enrolled in the MBA program and completed his MBA in December 2002. While at WKU, Donovan, who is from South Africa, was a starting member of the Men's Soccer Team and was awarded Academic All-American honors in his senior year.
Donovan began his career by joining the audit staff of Deloitte & Touche in Nashville. He quickly passed the CPA Examination and became a CPA in October 2004. Donovan rapidly advanced with Deloitte & Touche and currently holds the position of Audit Manager.
Donovan's has specialized in the automotive, insurance, and food retail industries during his tenure at Deloitte and Touche. In addition, he has experience serving U.S. subsidiaries of companies listed on both domestic and foreign stock exchanges. Donovan has also worked with privately-held U.S. companies, and companies planning to execute public offerings. His resume also includes managing multi-location client service engagements with both domestic and foreign offices of Deloitte and Touche. Donovan's responsibilities require regular contact with Deloitte and Touche's Tokyo and London offices.
As a manager at Deloitte and Touche, Donovan plays an active role in non-client service responsibilities within the firm, including recruiting, serving as a mentor and counselor, and participating in charitable organizations/events. More notably, he has been involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and currently serves as Treasurer an Board Member of the Brentwood Soccer Club.
Donovan has achieved much in the seven years since leaving WKU, and his accomplishments reflect positively on the Department of Accounting and the Gordon Ford College of Business. In recognition of his achievements, Donovan was selected as the Accounting Department's Outstanding Recent Alumnus. He was also recently chosen as the Ford College of Business Outstanding Recent Alumnus.
