Final Preview Day
Greece, Costa Rica, and England are the destinations for the 2015 Gatton Academy international experiences. These experiences mark eight years of the Gatton Academy's travel/study series. Each experience is described in brief below, with full details and applications found in the online brochures.
The Gatton Academy is also excited to announce a commitment of approximately $15,000 in scholarships for students who require additional financial assistance to travel and study abroad on Gatton Academy-led trips. Details on applying for these scholarships are found below in the Scholarship Opportunities section.
Gatton Academy students also have the opportunity to go on traditional, university-led study abroad programs. These other opportunities may be found at the WKU Office of Study Abroad and Global Learning.
From January 7-18, 2015, Gatton Academy students will explore the cities, culture, and history of Greece, including the cities and sites of Athens, Meteora, Kalampaka, Delphi, Olympia, Sparta, Nafplio, and the Saronic Islands.
The cost for the trip is estimated to be $2,375. (The overall program cost is estimated at $3,775 with the Gatton Academy supplementing $1,400 of the total cost through dedicated winter-term funding.)
Full details are available in the online brochure.
Students must submit a complete application by Monday, October 6th, 2014 to the Gatton Academy office. The cost of the trip will be due to the WKU Bursar's Office on the 2nd floor of Potter Hall in the second half of the fall semester at billing intervals to be announced.
Students must be eligible for return to the Gatton Academy in the spring semester 2015 to travel to Greece.
From January 1-16, 2015, sixteen Gatton Academy students will earn upper-level Biology credit (BIO 485: Honors Costa Rican Biodiversity Studies and Research) while studying and researching in Costa Rica.
Sites visited will include the Goldring-Gund Marine Biology Field Station on Playa Grande to participate in leatherback turtle nesting research, Cloudbridge Nature Reserve in the cloudforest of southern Costa Rica's Talamanca Mountains where students will carry out their own research projects in small teams, Corcovado National Park, and Isla del Caño for snorkeling.
The cost for the trip for students and families will be $1,050. (The overall program cost is $2,450, with the Academy supplementing $1,400 of the total cost through dedicated winter-term funding.) For the sixteen selected students, this trip will eventually require an additional $150 application fee to WKU's Study Abroad and Global Learning office. However, there is no money due when students submit their application to the Gatton Academy.
Full information and an application are available in the online brochure.
The application deadline is Friday, September 12th, 2014. Students must submit a complete application with parental signatures and a 250-word essay by the deadline to the Gatton Academy office. Space is limited to eight males and eight females. Students are selected based on essay responses and interests in ecological study. Students will be selected by Wednesday, September 24th. The cost of the trip will be due to the WKU Bursar's Office on the 2nd floor of Potter Hall in the second half of the fall semester at a billing date to be announced.
Students must be eligible for return to the Gatton Academy in the spring semester 2015 to travel to Costa Rica.
From July 16 - August 7, 2015, members of the Gatton Academy's class of 2016 have the opportunity to earn English 200—Honors Introduction to Literature credit while enjoying the literature and culture of the United Kingdom. Students develop an appreciation for literature by visiting literary landscapes and authors' homes and sites of inspiration based off of assigned course readings. Living at Harlaxton College's beautiful manor house campus near Grantham, England, students visit locations throughout the United Kingdom.
The cost for the trip is estimated at $4,200. (Students who choose an alternative (no-cost) winter-term learning opportunity will carry forth $1,400 of dedicated winter-term funding to apply to the cost of the program, effectively lowering the price to an estimated $2,800.) There is no money due when students submit their application to the Gatton Academy. However, this trip will eventually require an additional $150 application fee to WKU's Study Abroad and Global Learning office.

The Gatton Academy will provide up to $15,000 in need-based scholarships for students who require additional financial assistance to travel and study abroad on Gatton Academy-led trips.
Gatton Academy Need-Based Scholarship recipients typically come from households earning less than $60,000 annually for a family of four. However, we encourage students who feel they have faced significant financial hardship to apply with a description of circumstances. All sources of family income are taken into account.
How to Apply:
Students wishing to apply for one of our international scholarships must submit the following items via hard-copy to Derick Strode no later than the Friday, September 12th, 2014 deadline:
- A copy of the first page of the parents'/guardians' 2013 Form 1040 tax return (only up through line 37 of the Form 1040 is needed)
- A student statement, not to exceed 500 words, describing her or his reasons for wanting to travel abroad, which single destination of this year's three they are interested in traveling to, as well as the impact they expect going abroad will have on their overall Gatton Academy experience.
- Optional one-page parental statement describing family's need for assistance.
Student scholarship selection will occur before Monday, September 29th. For students who are offered scholarships, receipt of the actual scholarship is contingent upon the individual's eligibility to return for the semester following their trip.
