The Kentucky Academy of Mathematics and Science
  Program Model

Similar opportunities are offered to young people in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas. The highly successful Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, which has been operating for fifteen years, will be the model for the Gatton Academy. The Texas Academy class of 2004 averaged a 3.51 GPA their first year at TAMS. SAT scores of Texas Academy students go up about 100 points during their senior year, creating a senior class average of about 1400 (out of a possible 1600 on Critical Reasoning and Mathematics).

Similar academies, all funded by state legislatures, have been in existence for over 25 years and not one of them has been unsuccessful. The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky will create a stimulating and academically challenging environment in which Kentucky students flourish, too.

“TAMS has provided a means for talented, focused high school students to accelerate their education and put their skills and intellect to work much sooner. We will read of their great accomplishments ... accomplishments that may not have been if not for the foresight of the Texas legislature and the University of North Texas to identify and nurture these future leaders of science and technology.”

Richard Sinclair,
Ph.D., Dean of TAMS
