Dr. Binder came to Western
in 1985 following academic library directorships in Pennsylvania,
Virginia and New Jersey. He has built on the successes of his predecessors
and taken advantage of opportunities to showcase the libraries and
the museum, expanding public services significantly and promoting
the emergence of strong programs for public relations, fund raising,
library instruction, collection development and electronic information
as well as museum education and exhibits. The former Chair of the
Special Interest Group on Management of the American Society for
Information Science (ASIS), twice
Chair of the State-Assisted Academic Library Council of Kentucky
(SAALCK), and the author of Videotex and Teletext: New Online
Resources for Libraries (JAI Press, 1985), he has successfully
encouraged library faculty to pursue research and publication and
take leadership roles in professional associations.
Active in library consortia
for many years, Dr. Binder was a key player in the establishment
in 1999 of the Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL). He also led in the
creation of the Glasgow Campus Library, the Extended Campus Library
Services program, OCLC services, integrated online systems (NOTIS
and Endeavor), an extensive University Libraries & Kentucky Museum
Web site, Topper InfoPortal (TIP), and other electronic services.
Dr. Binder also has served as
library automation consultant for the Instituto Colombiano del Petroleo
and Kentucky State University, and worked with a WKU librarian to
establish the college library for the University College of Belize. |
