Acceptable Behavior Policy


Guidelines || Examples of Unacceptable Behavior

It is the policy of Western Kentucky University Libraries (Helm-Cravens Library, Educational Resources Center, Kentucky Library and Museum, and Glasgow Campus Library) to maintain an atmosphere conducive to reading, study, and research. Library and Museum users must refrain from exceeding acceptable noise levels, eating, drinking, and use of tobacco except in officially designated locations, and/or from any other disruptive behavior which impinges on the rights and needs of others. Users violating these requirements will be subject to the following:

Guidelines:

1. Any individual identified by University Libraries faculty or staff as exhibiting unacceptable behavior will be asked to desist such behavior or leave the library.

2. If this individual refuses to comply, University Police will be called to handle the situation.

3. Information on each incident will be documented and filed at the University Libraries. This confidential information may be used in any decision to restrict the individual's use of the libraries.

4. Any student who has violated this policy will be reported to the Dean of Student Life for appropriate action.

5. Any faculty member who has violated this policy will be reported to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

6. Any other Western employee who has violated this policy will be reported to the Director of Personnel Services for appropriate action.

Examples of Unacceptable Behavior

1. Excessive noise :

Examples: Loud talking, singing, playing a musical instrument, or radio.
2. Consumption of food and/or beverages in unauthorized areas:
Beverages contained in hard plastic cups with spill-proof lids will be permitted in library study areas, except at computer workstations, the Kentucky Library, and the University Archives.
3. Use of any tobacco products.

4. Mutilation or theft of University Libraries' materials or property.

5. Disorderly, disruptive, or threatening behavior.
Examples: approaching patrons or staff and engaging in unwanted and inappropriate interaction, threats to personal safety of patrons or staff, and disorderly, destructive, or violent behavior.
6. Suspicious lurking.

7. Sexual offenses.
Examples: indecent exposure, inappropriate sexual advances, or harassment (physical or verbal).
