Twenty-second Century Technical Services, or Bambi Meets Godzilla
Sheila Intner

Sheila Inter challenged technical services librarians to look into the future and foresee what role they will play in the libraries of the 22nd century. She cautioned that, because of globalization and ever-increasing technological changes, it is difficult to predict what will happen even a few years hence; however, in order to have some control over their professional future technical service librarians must decide today whether they will be "Bambi" or "Godzilla", that is "loser" or "winner"; "victim" or "perpetrator". She posited three different possible future scenarios:

  1. Expert Systems - in this future world technical services as we know it will all but disappear as publishers and expert systems supply most bibliographical data and control access.
  2. Government Control - national library repositories to which individuals would apply electronically would control access to most information; technical services will be responsible for collecting, storing, preparing specific bibliographic tools.
  3. Privatization - access to information will be controlled by large private corporations who employ huge staffs of bibliographical specialists and some technical services librarians. In this scenario, technical services still serves an important function in helping provide access to materials in the information databases.

In order to avoid the fate of "Bambi", Professor Intner encouraged technical services librarians to become proactive, service-oriented professionals. By providing valuable services to the public, one patron at a time, and developing customized acquisitions and cataloging procedures, technical services librarians will avoid becoming an extinct species by the 22nd century.
