This photograph is one of more than one thousand photographs, carte de
visites, and photographic reproductions featured in the exhibit. The subject,
Private John Payne, was a native of Frankfort, Kentucky, and chief bugler
for the 2d Kentucky Infantry. He captured the bugle shown in the photograph
at the Battle of Hartsville and carried it throughout the remainder of
the war, engraving the names of his regiment's battles on it.
