Southern Normal School began as Glasgow Normal School but moved to Bowling Green in 1884. When a 1906 law provided state funding, the school became the Western Kentucky State Normal School, with Henry Hardin Cherry as president. In 1911 students and faculty moved to "Vinegar Hill" where Western Kentucky University's Cherry Hall now stands.
