Wallace was born December 7, 1919 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. In 1943 Wallace
received her A.B. degree from the University of Kentucky majoring in art.
She attended the Kansas City Art Institute earning an M.A. in Design in
1945. Upon graduation, Wallace taught from 1946-1948 at Washburn University
in Topeka, Kansas. She entered Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1948 concentrating
her studies in weaving and ceramics earning her MFA in 1951. She then
took a position as United Nations Handweaving Expert from 1951 to 1953
in the Philippines. As director she helped establish training programs
for island weavers and generally worked toward improvements in hand weaving.
Upon her return to the United States, Wallace taught at Southern Illinois
University and at Illinois State University before joining the art faculty
at Western Kentucky University in 1965. In 1985 the university bestowed
upon her the title of Professor Emeritus. Wallace was a charter member
of Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. She currently resides in her
hometown of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. |
