Dawn
'Til Dusk,1943 Sylvia Wald was born in Philadelphia on October 30, 1915 daughter of Harry F. and Tillie (Weiner) Wald. Sylvia's art education began with classes in high school. She attended the Moore Institute of Art, Science & Industry from 1931 to 1935 studying painting. During the Depression, Wald taught elementary school art through a Philadelphia WPA project - a work she continued after moving to New York in 1937. Sylvia joined a new movement towards screen printing making her first prints early in 1940. Shortly thereafter, she married Alter Weiss, an army physician soon stationed in Springfield, Missouri. With limited living and no studio space, Wald started sketching scenes of her daily life and travels. The following year the couple moved to Louisville where Weiss was posted to Nichols General Hospital. For four years she worked from her dining room producing prints from her earlier sketches; "Dawn 'til Dusk" being an example. In 1946 Sylvia left Kentucky and returned to New York. In 1949 University of Louisville's Allen R. Hite Institute hosted a solo exhibition of her work. Sylvia Wald currently lives in New York City. See also: Meng, Sarah.
