Carolyn Thomas was born August 8, 1941 in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1963 she graduated from Western Kentucky University with a B.A. in Art. While a student at Western, Carolyn won the Best of Show award for her painting "Reclining Nude" in the First Annual Student Art Competition in 1960. She was active in the art club and was a member of the Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Pi National Honorary Art Fraternity holding offices in both organizations. In 1961 her oil painting of a floral still life was one of three works selected to represent Western in a state-wide exhibit which toured the Kentucky State Parks. Thomas returned to Western to pursue an M.A. in Art Education graduating in 1972. She taught art classes while studying and in public schools in Indiana and Jefferson County, Kentucky. Carolyn Thomas currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.
