Xantippe Saunders, born January 1, 1838 in Adair County, Kentucky, was the daughter of William H. and Mary (Hancock) Saunders. Xantippe, cousin of Samuel Clemens, grew up in Columbia. She first attended Professor Cornelius Pering's Louisville art school for girls where she became a lifelong friend of his daughter Cornelia. In New York she studied under Lemuel Everett Wilmarth and Joseph O. Eaton. "Tip" Saunders is first listed as "artist" in the 1874 Louisville City Directory. By 1886 Tip and Cornelia had established the Pering and Saunders Art School. Particularly known as a portrait painter, she became one of the leading artists in Louisville for many years. This Kentucky landscape was executed in 1879. Xantippe Saunders died in Louisville December 4, 1922 at age 84.
