Stair Runner, 1949 Arline (Perkins) Rawlins was born on February 3, 1899 in Bowling Green daughter of Arthur and Claudia Perkins. Arline graduated in 1923 from Western Kentucky State Normal and Teacher's College with an A.B. degree. She joined the Bowling Green City School faculty in 1923 as 4th grade teacher. In 1946 Rawlins became the art supervisor for the city schools keeping the job until her death in 1962. She also taught Saturday classes in the college's art department. During World War II she studied art in Washington, DC. at the Corcoran. Rawlins earned her B.A. in 1952 and M.A. in 1958 from Western. Though many of her paintings exist, Rawlins is best known for her hooked rug designs that were featured in such national magazines as Woman's Day, American Home, and Family Circle. Her business was named "Nine Hearths Hooked Rug Designs" after her family home. The main staircase of "Nine Hearths" showcased Rawlins' magnificent "Kentucky Stair Runner." Featuring twenty famous Kentucky scenes, the runner was made of wool strips hand cut by Rawlins' mother. The creation took first place at the 1949 Kentucky State Fair. Arline Rawlins died in Warren County on February 25, 1962.
