c. 1963 Pansy (Wilcoxson) Phillips was born June 1, 1909 in Green County, Kentucky to Theodore and Emma (Overfelt) Wilcoxson. During high school Pansy took lessons in "expression" and in the summer of 1929 attended the Louisville Conservatory of Music and Expression. She returned home to her first job teaching private lessons in Art and Expression through the city school system. After a few years, Pansy enrolled in Western Kentucky State Teachers College to obtain a 2-year teaching certificate. A semester course in art was all the only formal art training she received. After a short-lived career teaching in the public schools, Pansy married Russell Phillips in 1938. She worked for the WPA and during World War II for Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles as a plant guard. At the war's end, the couple returned to Greensburg where she taught private art classes and maintained a gallery. She soon became a driving force in the town's arts community. Her classes eventually evolved into a group called the Greensburg Art Club. The drawing on display is one of many she executed to illustrate Janice Holt Giles' book A Little Better than Plumb. Pansy Phillips lived in Greensburg until her death on February 1, 1990 at age 80. |
