Portrait of Mildred Potter Lissauer, 1946
Oil on canvas, 33 x 25 inches
Collection, The Kentucky Museum, Bowling Green

Sarah (Gaines) Peyton was born in Bowling Green on December 18, 1896 to Walter and Elvira Gaines. Daughter of a lawyer, Sarah attended Randolph-Macon College in Virginia and the Arts Students League in New York. She later studied privately with Sophonisba Hergesheimer of Nashville. After her 1928 marriage to Herbert Peyton, the two traveled where the husband's work took them. After three years, the Peytons moved back to Bowling Green where Sarah continued to pursue her career as she raised her three children. A dedicated artist, Peyton painted nearly every day. After she and her husband moved to Nashville, Peyton would occasionally return to Bowling Green to paint portraits of friends such as this one of Warren County native Mildred Potter Lissauer. Sarah Peyton died in Jacksonville, Florida in 1997 at age 100.
