Hattie (Hutchcraft) Hill was born April 1847 in Bourbon County, Kentucky daughter of James and Eliza Ann (Williams) Hutchcraft. One of thirteen children, Hattie began to take serious interest in the arts by the mid-1870s. She studied in Cincinnati, New York and Boston. By 1889 Hill traveled to Paris to attend Academie Julian and spent several years studying with Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre. While in France, Hill exhibited twice at the Paris Salon. After six years abroad she returned to the United States in 1895. She maintained a studio in Los Angeles for two years working primarily as a portrait painter. She also painted still lifes, landscapes and marine scenes. About 1898 Hill returned to Kentucky where she taught and worked in several central Kentucky cities. The piece on exhibit was executed prior to her trip abroad. Hattie Hutchcraft Hill died September 2, 1921 in Paris, Kentucky at the age of 73.
