Dorothy Grider was born January 19, 1915 in Bowling Green, Kentucky daughter of Rufus and Patricia (Fenwick) Grider. While earning her B.A. Dorothy studied art at Western Kentucky State College with department head Ivan Wilson. As a freshman, she won a scholarship to the Phoenix Art Institute of New York where she attended a three-month summer term. It was actually the 4th summer term Grider had studied in New York the first at age 14. She also studied under illustrators Norman Rockwell and Franklin Booth. The painting on display was executed while Grider attended school in New York. For seven months in 1950, Grider studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and toured Europe and North Africa. Dorothy next pursued work as a commercial artist designing playing card backs and greeting cards. On the side she illustrated children's books. As commissions grew her free lance job soon became a full-time occupation. Grider has illustrated over 100 children's books in her career. In 1953, she moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania where she currently resides.
