Carrie Douglas Dudley was born March 31, 1894 in Flemingsburg, Kentucky to Charles L. and Lula (Kenner) Dudley. One of four children and daughter of an agricultural and implement retail merchant, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Carrie painted portraits and still lifes but primarily supported herself as a commercial artist living in Chicago and New York. Known professionally as Douglas Ewen, she illustrated children's books and designed greeting cards. In 1963 she moved to Louisville and remained there until her death on March 11, 1982.
