Lucy McGowan Diecks was born November 20, 1907 in Louisville, Kentucky to John and Mary Jane Diecks. One of six children, Lucy was encouraged by her teachers from an early age to pursue her artistic interests. In the 1920s, Lucy entered the Corcoran Fine Arts School in Washington, D.C. where she studied for four years. She returned to Louisville to begin a 30-year career teaching art at Atherton High School for Girls. She also taught classes at Louisville's Art Center Association in the evenings. Diecks earned her B.F.A. degree from Syracuse University in New York where she attended during the summers. She also studied with Berlin artist Juro Kubicek in Louisville. Spending one summer at the Saugatuck School of Painting, Lucy used vacations to study at various artist colonies in the United States. An active member of the arts community in Louisville, Diecks retired from teaching in 1962. She died in Jefferson County on January 14, 1998 at age 92.
