Bridge, 1953 Faye (Graham) Becker was born to Everette Lee and Viola (Wright) Graham on August 13, 1911 in Green County, Kentucky. A self-taught artist, Becker painted landscapes in oils many executed from photographs she had taken. While living in Hodgensville after the death of her husband, Becker began to submit paintings for exhibition. The work on exhibit was one of 112 award-winning paintings selected in 1953 from 1,500 entrees at the First National Art Festival held at the 69th Armory in New York. Sponsored by the Amateur Artist Association of America and American Artist Magazine, the award was the second she had won in two years from this group. Both paintings were included in a traveling exhibition that toured the United States for one year. Becker, a beautician, lived many years in Elizabethtown where she owned and operated both the Mary Eileene Beauty Shoppe and Faye's House of Beauty. She continued to paint until her death at age 88 in 1999. |
