The 48 women in this exhibition were selected to represent the activity of Kentucky's women artists between 1850 and 1970. Some of the women were highly trained while others learned skills from their mothers and grandmothers. Despite boundaries set by family duties, economics and attitudes toward women in the work place, these women found the time, energy, and resources for creative expression. |

Beginning as a cooperative effort between the Kentucky Museum and Western Kentucky University faculty John Warren Oakes and Dr. Elizabeth Oakes, the project grew into a collaboration with the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art extending the time period represented to the present. The collaboration resulted in companion exhibits - one focusing on the period 1850-1970, the other 1970 to present. Exhibition Dates Kentucky
