Constructed in 1927 to heat the new buildings under construction, Western’s heating plant was a simple utilitarian building. Its outstanding characteristic is the towering masonry smokestack. A spur track from the Louisville and Nashville Railroad’s main line allowed cars to be moved right next to the building. Heat was transported in pipes housed in underground concrete conduits.
