Expressing Kentucky is a community arts project of the Kentucky Museum at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Kentucky Arts Council Community Artist-in-Residence, Delaire Rowe, is working at the museum and other community centers with various groups of citizens on visual arts projects that reflect individual and group points of view concerning the various community identities within the state. The purpose is to promote individual and community self expression, exploration and pride essential to both community and arts development. The artist is a community resource, collaborating with local people on projects. Emphasis is on the participation of community people in the creative process and in the life of the museum. Community groups involved include the Houchens Center, Barren River Adult Day Care at Western Kentucky University, Girls Inc., Phoenix Theater, Bowling Green Special Olympics and regional and local schools. Activities and events include exhibitions, workshops for community groups, students and teachers and other visiting artists. Sponsored in part by a grant from the Kentucky Arts Council a state agency in the Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet. |
