The Doll Festival, 1998 Machine Piecework, Hand Quilting 29 x 32 inches Masako Kotaki On March 3, Japanese families with daughters traditionally celebrate the festival of Hinamatsuri (the Girls Festival or Doll Festival). They display Hina dolls, arranged by rank, on tiered shelves and serve hisi-mochi (red, white and geen rice cakes) and shiro-zake (sweet white sake). A complete set of dolls includes the Emperor and Empress, two government ministsters or lords, three ladies, five musicians and three servants. |
