The majority of work on the trails created inside Mammoth Cave was done by the enrollees of NP-1 Camp. Some of the work was also done by NP-3 Camp. This work would require the breaking down of the rocks into gravel size pieces by sledgehammers. Then the enrollees would layer dirt found inside the cave on top of the gravel and pack it down. The edges of the trails were either extended to the walls of the cave, or blended into the floor in such a manner as to make them look more natural. In his report detailing the work of the CCC at Mammoth Cave National Park up until April 1940, Acting Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins wrote that enrollees spent 12,000 man days on cave improvements totaling 24 miles.
