Exhibits
Opened October 11, 2002 Kentucky Collaboration, a community arts project sponsored by The Kentucky Museum and the Kentucky Arts Council, works to create a place in the community for creative exchange and communication using collaborations between fine arts, folk arts, theatre, folklorists and oral histories. Community Artist-in-Residence Lynne Ferguson collaborates with various local groups and area schools on visual arts projects that reflect individual and community self-expression, exploration and pride essential to both community and arts development. The artist is a community resource, collaborating with local people on projects.
Women
and PovertyFebruary 1 - June 29, 2003 "Women and Poverty" features the documentary
photography of four well-know women photographers of the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries: Frances Benjamin Johnston, Dorothea Lange,
Marion Post Wolcott and Doris Ulmann. June 1 - July 13, 2003 This exhibition of Depression era murals found in Kentucky
Post Offices represents history on the wall. Painted as part of government
art programs, the murals were, for the most part, placed in small rural
post offices. The emphasis was to provide tasteful art of good quality
to those who had little experience of art at all. The photographs in this
exhibition, travelled by the Allen R. Hite Art Institute, show the murals
that exist today. Sponsored in part by Landmark
Association of Bowling Green and Warren County. March 15 - October 31, 2003 "Children's
Book Illustrations" features the original artwork from a selection
of late 20th century children's books. Supplemented by a display of 19th
century books, this exhibit shows the work of such well-known illustrators
as Eric Carle, Robert Quackenbush and Ernest Shepard. A highlight of the
exhibition is the entire run of illustrations drawn by Simeon Shimin from
Mary Jarrell's "The Knee-Baby". The show promises to delight
the visitor as the books have delighted children through the years. Sponsored
by Integra Bank and the Dorothy
Grider Art Exhibit Fund. Carving
Sound: A Tour of Regional LuthiersSeptember 16 - December 11, 2003 Standing
in front of his workbench Jimmy Robertson holds a mandolin he is building
in his Metcalfe County shop. Robertson is one of the luthiers (makers
of fretted instruments) shown in this exhibit curated by Western Kentucky
Folk Studies students Paul McCoy and Stuart Burrill. The exhibit will
feature handmade musical instruments from south central Kentucky.
