TEACHER'S GUIDE TO

History and Folklife of the Kentucky Frontier

ACTIVITY

Architectural Preservation

The state of Kentucky has a wealth of historic buildings. A field trip to a
local log cabin or other early structure gives students the opportunity to study
folk architecture firsthand. Have students measure the logs, doorways, windows,
etc. and make a drawing of the building and a map of the site. Locate the site on
a city or county map and list its coordinates.
Take pictures and conduct research on some of the earliest structures in your
community. Ask a member of an area preservation group to talk to the class about
architecture and preservation. You may want to use the information gathered to
develop a slide show, coloring book, or walking or driving tour about historic
buildings in your town or county.
