These figures were crafted by Helen LaFrance Orr who
was born in 1919 in Graves County, Kentucky. They are
part of a five member grouping she named the Pineknot
family. An African-American, Orr draws on her memories
of western Kentucky farm life in choosing subjects for
her artwork. Her first carvings were dolls made from
roots and branches for her younger sister. In addition
to the Pineknot Family, The Kentucky Museum collection
includes another wooden figure, Mr. jones, and four
oil on board paintings of farm activities.
