
The Barren River and
the Civil War |
Age: 4th
grade and above
Objectives:
- To help students better understand the
importance of the Barren River during the Union and Confederate
occupation of Bowling Green during the Civil War.
Preparation:
Students should be familiar with some
history of the Civil War. They should have some knowledge of
Kentucky's role in the Civil War and be made familiar with local
Civil War history.
Instructions:
This lesson should provide students with
a basic understanding of the Civil War and the fueling arguments
of both sides. Civil War letters, diaries, maps, flags, and clothing
can all be used to illustrate the historic and cultural significance
of this period in United States history.
- Have students study maps of Bowling Green
and Warren County during the Civil War, identify the locations
of the Civil War forts in Bowling Green. Discuss how the location
of the forts was significant and why it was important to guard
the river.
- Ask students to name the goods and services
the armies controlled when they governed the river.
- Assign the students to pretend they are
teenagers during the Civil War. Have them keep a diary over the
duration of this lesson which illustrates their thoughts, observations,
emotions, and beliefs about the war. Students may decide to be
fictional characters if they prefer.
