The Development of Roads in Warren County


Age:
4th grade and above

Objective:

  • To explore the history of Warren County and the importance of roadways in its development and to examine the social and economic effects of road development.

Preparation:

Lesson should be conducted after students have examined the different periods of Warren County history and roadway development and visited First American Roads, Rails, and Rivers Online.

Instructions:

  • Conduct a discussion on the development of Warren County's roadways and ask students the following questions:

    1) What types of roadway transportation were used during the different periods in Warren County's history?
    2) Were the modes of transportation efficient?
    3) What were the economic and social effects of new roads?
    4) How are roads and roadway transportation different today?

  • Students should prepare a timeline of significant developments in Warren County's roadways and roadway transportation and indicate dates, significance, and any applicable social and economic effects.
