The Impact of Automobile Travel on Local Economy


Age:
4th grade and above

Objective:

  • To examine the social and economic impacts of the automobile.

Materials:

  • Copy of a 1950s Kentucky roadway map.
  • Preparation:

    This lesson should be conducted after exploring a 1950s map of the Dixie Highway and doing research on automobiles in the 1950s.

    Instructions:

    Using a map of Kentucky, students should imagine that they are traveling along Dixie Highway (U.S. 31W) in the late 1950s from Louisville to Bowling Green. Students should make a log of their trip and indicate travel time, distance, obstacles, significant cities, and landmarks.
